Is there a connection between the rise in number of freelance graphic designers and the reducing number of small local printers? ( Five staff or less. )

In my own county of Pembrokeshire I have noticed that over the last few years the number of printing firms has more than halved whilst at the same time more and more people are setting themselves up as Graphic Designers. Designers who naturally send there work to large trade printing firms out of there aria.

The small local printing firm cannot compete with these big companies economies of scale so is ultimately forced out of business. Indeed many can only compete by offering printing and design as a complete package. My own firm Modern Print, ( www.modernprint.co.uk ) is in this situation. If we were only producing jobs that were supplied with artwork, the profit margins are so small and the volumes to little to make a good living.

Yes this may well be a natural evolution in the industry and if the local printers were more efficient or dynamic they would survive. However I do fined it intriguing that at a time when the number of printers in my community is declining dramatically the number of Graphic Designers working freelance are increasing at an even faster rate.

I am in the fortunate position of being a health surviver in this changing market. What do you think? Is there a link?

I personally think that the decline of printers is again down to the internet. 10 years ago many people couldnt access the web and the people that could wouldnt have used it in the manner that they do today.

A business looking for print say in the 1990's would have probably looked locally if they wanted to purchase leaflets, brochures etc, but now with a wealth of online services you can now access instant prices nationally and fish in a larger pool (so to speak). IMO this has lead to the smaller firms not being able to print with large printers that have better economies of scale.

Regards graphic designers, this is one area that I feel has increased, not sure either way if it is linked with the printer decline. Maybe its due to more courses offering training.

We're a Sheffield based print and design company who work with several freelance designers and developers. It has proven to be an asset when competing with larger printers, print brokers and design agencies to have a multi-skilled workforce on hand.

I wouldn't have thought that the increase of freelance designers in an area would contribute to the decline of printing firms, however it is an interesting observation.

As a London printer we get many queries from so called 'freelance designers' which is often someone who has a computer and a package such as publisher, puts a few words and images together and bingo they are a designer.  The artwork supplied is a nightmare and usually has to be recreated or repro has to do some major editing.

I also agree that the internet has opened many more doors for people and is also making it easier for people to get more estimates.  Some people I speak to now get up to 10 quotes which is crazy and sending out the wrong message that the only thing that matters is cost!

The biggest effect that the internet has is the commoditisation of everything including print. The only way to successfully to compete is to offer something over and above what your competitors can. We offer great design and a wide range of printing options, that allows us to differentiate ourselves against home based graphic designers and the large online commodity priced printers.

Thats got to be the larger printers doing that, the birth of the internet and the fact that old fasioned printers are tradesmen, not businessmen!  We are quiet a small printing company but do very well and offer very cheap printing prices especially on leaflet printing.  Check out our website www.jaxprinting.co.uk
